OliverOliviaGracieSammy

Oliver, Olivia, Gracie and Sammy are siblings whose momma has tested positive for FeLV - Feline Leukemia Virus. One of the kittens has been tested and she also tested positive. These beautiful babies are truly special needs adoptions and they are looking for special people to open their homes and hearts to them. They are 10 weeks old and all four of them have 7 toes on their front paws! They are all friendly, love attention and love to sit on warm, cozy laps. The kittens are currently in foster care. Please call the Shelter - 253-5841 - if you are one of those special people!

Matching Gift Programs

Employer Matching Gift Programs
Another way to Help Us!

Does your employer have a Matching Gift Program? If so, it is an excellent way to double your donation to the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York. For example, if you make a $100 donation to the Shelter and you send us paperwork from your employer, we will send in that paperwork and your employer will match your gift! How easy is that!

Please check with your employer's Personnel Office to see if they have such a program - and if they don't - why not ask them to explore the possibilities!

Thank you for all you do for the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York!

Previous Clinic #13:  July 25, 2008 - On July 25 our FLSPCA/Shelter Outreach Services spay/neuter clinic altered 27 dogs and cats. There were three female dogs and the rest were ferals and stray cats and some individually-owned cats. Our total to date is 344 animals that will not contribute to the pet-overpopulation crisis! If you are a feral colony caretaker, help stray cats or are low-income eligible, please call the Shelter for information on our clinics and to schedule an appointment. Clinics are held twice a month - on the second and fourth Friday.

Message from the Director

"FREE KITTUNS"Free Kittens

The sign on the mailbox post was hand-lettered on cardboard and read "FREE KITTUNS." It appeared there two or three times a year, sometimes spelled this way, sometimes that, but the message was always the same.

In a corner of the farmhouse back porch was a cardboard box with a dirty towel inside, on which huddled a bouquet of kittens of different colors, mewing and blinking and waiting for their mama to return from hunting in the fields. The mother cat managed to show them enough interest for the first several weeks, but after having two or three litters per year, she was worn out and her milk barely lasted long enough for her babies to survive.

New Teepee SheltersNew Teepee SheltersNew Teepee Shelters

Thanks to the generosity of Bryce Bach and Katie Rhodes and her mom, our dogs have new shelters to protect themselves from the sun while on the outdoor runs. Katie and her mom donated the materials for these wonderful "teepee" style shelters and Bryce donated his time and talent to design, build and paint them. They are a much-needed facelift for the front of the Shelter and the dogs love them!

THANK YOU to Bryce, Katie and Mom!

On Saturday, June 7, a group of REALLY DEDICATED people came to the Shelter to help clean up the building exterior and grounds and took a stab at turning it into the Taj Mahal! The torrid temperature - 90 degrees plus - didn't deter them - and they pruned, painted, moved, etc. and after 4 hours of really hard work, good things had happened. Brenda Kehoskie, one of our adoptions counselors, spearheaded the effort. Volunteers pictured above: Bill and Debbie, David, Bryce, Katie, Skip, and our other adoptions counselors, Maryanne Rhoad and Sylvia DelFavero. Unfortunately we were unable to get pictures of the following volunteers, Dave DelFavero, Cheryl Schultz, Alyssa Tardiff and Kara Finch. Many thanks for your hard work!

Spring Clean Up Day will be an annual event - as will Fall Clean Up Day! Watch the website, the newspapers and the newsletters for that date!

Summertime Tips

While we are not officially into the summer season, the hot weather has certainly arrived and with hot weather come some real threats to our companion animals. Fleas and ticks are a real problem. Fleas can cause dermatitis in animals that are allergic to them, they cause tapeworm and they cause just plain misery from the bites and the ensuing itching and scratching. A variety of topical preventives are available which are very effective. All animals in the household should be treated. Please note that flea collars DO NOT WORK and can actually harm your pet. Also, for cats, please use products that are specifically labelled for cats. Those not labelled as such can be fatal if used. Mosquitos are not only pesky to us humans, they can cause heartbreak for your pet, or we should say, they can cause heartworm disease if bitten by a mosquito capable of transmitting heartworm. Heartworm is a devastating and fatal disease - and it is easily prevented by once per month tablets or topical applications. Please protect your pet! An ounce of prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure. As always, prior to using any medication on your pet (dogs and cats both), please consult with your veterinarian. And finally, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR COMPANION ANIMAL in your car during hot and steamy weather. Leaving the windows cracked doesn't work. The only thing that works is leaving your pet at home during hot weather. Caring and concerned citizens will call law enforcement - who may have to rescue your pet by breaking your vehicle's windows. PLEASE - leave your pet home. We wish you and your family pets a wonderful summer season!
